Florida Atlantic University Campus Update

September 2, 2005

Athletic Fee:  Adopted $2 increase in athletic fee permitted for universities going to division 1-A.  Initially student committee recommended with conditions that could not be adopted including corresponding roll-back of other student fees.  Committee met again and gave direct approval with president agreeing to several requests.  At BOT meeting students spoke against increase, including SGA President, who had voted for it in committee.

Budget:  Only $2M increase from enrollment growth funds.  We took a big hit on unfunded over-enrollment.   Of this, $1M for critical needs; $1M not yet allocated (includes pay raises with funds for <1%.)

Tuition:  No change from BOG approved rates.

Scripps:  We reached agreement with Palm Beach County on a second building on FAU Jupiter Campus.  We will begin to pay for it only after paying off the first building.  We’re paying at a rate of $2M per year from PECO funds.

Medical Program:  We obtained BOG approval of expansion to 4-year program from a program limited to only the first 2-years.

Strategic Planning:    We are in the midst of a major strategic planning initiative.  Our BOT initially adopted the four BOG strategic goals.  We are looking at adding three more covering the key supporting areas of Computing Infrastructure, Physical Facilities, and Communications.  The BOT approved a new mission statement and we are working on values and vision statements.  The BOT has major strategic planning retreat next week.

Revitalize Faculty Governance:  I am trying to increase participation in faculty governance.  As a first step, we are video conferencing Faculty Senate meetings between campuses.

Major Donations:  Barry Kaye recently donated $5M to the College of Business in support of a School of Insurance and Finance.
