Florida International University Campus Update

September 2, 2005

The Faculty Senate met once during the Summer and approved a proposal to merge the School of Computer Science into the College of Engineering.

Major topics for discussion and attention during the 2005-2006 Academic Year will include:

The University’s proposal for a Medical School.

Academic Learning Compacts [a joint administration-senate committee is reviewing all compacts for approval].

The yearly calendar and a possible need to revise starting dates given significant changes in the public school systems’ calendars.

Classroom utilization as well as enrollment management.

Personnel Policies for non-bargaining unit faculty members [approximately 20% of the faculty—a joint administration-senate committee will be looking implementation of these policies].

A major compliance initiative.

The so-called Academic Freedom initiatives at the state and national level.

Several reorganization proposals regarding Arts and Sciences as well as Architecture.

An administrative initiative to re-examine and re-conceptualize the “univeristy/community” relationship.
