ACFS Meeting with Chancellor Mark Rosenberg November 16, 2005 at UNF, Jacksonville, FL
A meeting for ACFS members with the new BOG Chancellor, Dr. Mark Rosenberg (former FIU Provost) was arranged by Dr. Martha Pelaez. It started at 11 AM on November 16 and ran for approximately one hour. ACFS members in attendance for this meeting included: Martha Pelaez (FIU), Judy Solano (UNF), Roy Levow (FAU), Bruce Hauptli (FIU), Kim Tanzer (UF), Dreamal Worthen (FAMU), and Arlen Chase (UCF). Chancellor Rosenberg had asked for the meeting as a way of introducing himself and stating that he sincerely desired to work with the ACFS. His overall goal is to see organizational stability within the higher education system in the State of Florida. One of the problems that he intends to examine is the absence of financial aid for students who need it. He also noted that education in Florida needed to have “cost-effective quality” in order to be responsible to Florida’s citizens. Dr. Rosenberg also stressed that the universities needed to speak with one voice in order to effectively gain funding from the legislature. Also discussed were different timeframes used by the BOG and faculty committees; there is some tension here because the BOG works on a much quicker schedule than faculty committees do. Dr. Rosenberg further noted his desire to come to Florida campuses to meet with university faculty senates before the next legislative session. Dr. Pelaez thanked Dr. Rosenberg for his interest in ACFS.
